A HARRY Williams goal gave Gloucester City victory over FC United of Manchester in a heated affair at Broadhurst Park.

Joe Parker gave the Tigers the lead before a stunning George Thomson freekick brought FC United level at the break.

Williams’ goal gives Gloucester their first win in six matches and only their fourth of the season.

Meanwhile for the Reds, the defeat ends a run of two successive wins and is their sixth loss in seven home games.

Only four points separated the two sides at the start of play which was evident in the match’s opening stages. Both teams appeared tentative in their attacking actions with chances few and far between.

Ironically then, it was the men from Gloucestershire who took the lead with an especially delightful passage of play.

Femi Orenuga sent Lewis Hall through on goal with a deft pass which split open the Reds defence, Hall then squared unselfishly for Parker to round off the move.

It was hard to understand how Gloucester were the league’s lowest scorers based on such a goal, but it wasn’t so difficult to grasp why they are second-bottom as soon FC United were level.

A fantastic free-kick from George Thomson from around 30 yards evaded everyone in the Gloucester box and went straight through the hands of Jasbir Singh.

The Gloucester ‘keeper will feel he should have done better with the strike and that levelled the scores before the break.

Gloucester, who won the reverse fixture back on the opening day, seemed to draw confidence from that result as they came out in the second half full of intent.

Mid-way through the second half, the Tigers’ endeavour paid off. A clearing header from Billy Jones found its way to Parker who flicked on for Williams, the forward made his finish look simple as he rounded Carnell and tapped home.

Referee Sean Hudson had a difficult afternoon, with both sides accusing him of poor officiating, FC United particularly after disallowing a late Greaves goal.

The win moves Gloucester out of the relegation zone and up to 17th, whereas FC United stay in 14th over Christmas.
