ASHTON United striker Martin Pilkington has been suspended from all footballing activity for four years after a Football Association investigation into betting irregularities.

Four players who were registered with the Tameside club for the 2014/15 season have been sanctioned by the national governing body.

Pilkington, the only current member of the squad, will have the final 12 months of the charge suspended for two years.

The striker has scored plenty of goals for the Evo-Stik Premier Division side and the news will come as a blow to joint-managers Steve Halford and Paul Phillips.

The club have said they will not comment further on the matter.
