DOZENS of police cars rushed through the streets of Southport in hunt for a white van on Sunday evening.

Police were called by a member of the public, who reported that they had seen the driver of a van approach a girl in the Litherland area of Liverpool.

The girl had walked off from the van, but the driver then started to drive around the area.

The car was seen by another patrol car a few minutes later and a chase took place through Formby and Southport.

The incident took place at around 8pm, and was captured on camera by snapchat users Sam Farrington and Ben Hunt.

Sam Farrington, a witness, said:” The man got pulled out of the van he had stolen and then was put into the back of the police van,

“When I saw it, I was shocked as a man and two police cars had all crashed together. Nothing like that really happens around in Southport.”

Other pictures on social media show the high-speed chase come to an end outside Southport railway station – where it is believed that police cars crashed into the van, after it crashed into a taxi.

“Stop sticks were put down to stop the car, and at 8:15pm it came to a stop outside the railway station on London street, Southport, where the driver was arrested.”

Merseyside Police confirmed earlier this morning that a 35-year-old man from Huyton has been arrested.

He is currently under investigation for a range of offences including attempt abduction, attempt serious assault of police officer, dangerous driving, criminal damage, and driving whilst over the prescribed limit for a specified drug.
