SALFORD City joint-managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley took charge of their 100th game for the Ammies on Saturday and it was “the perfect day” as their side beat Worcester City 3-0 at Moor Lane. Quays News reporter Matt Bullin looks at their story after 100, not out…

Paul Scholes a co-owner of Salford City, and member of the Class of 92’ was in attendance at the game to present them with a commemorative award before the match.

On the day the achievement was marked by a routine 3-0 victory in the league thanks to goals from Nick Haughton, Mike Phenix and Scott Burton.
The Ammies’ joint-manager Bernard Morley said of his 100th game in charge: “Obviously it’s a great achievement; especially in this day and age managers don’t seem to get that chance anymore.
If you lose four or five on the bounce you seem to be out that door. But we’re winners and we’ve always been winners.
“Two years in, we’ve enjoyed it here and experienced a lot of stuff through them times – so long may it continue.”
The pair were hired as joint-managers midway through the 2014-15 season when Salford City were in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier First Division.
There was no bedding in period for them and in truth they did not need it as they led Salford to 15 wins in their first 17 games in charge, and eventually the league title and promotion.
Their first full season at the helm came in 2015-16, in which they helped the club secure promotion from the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier Division via the play-offs, as well as a memorable FA Cup run in which they reached the second round proper.
This remarkable success meant Salford began the current season in the Vanarama National League North following back-to-back promotions.
Saturday’s win means Salford now sit seventh in the table, just a point of the play-offs, though Johnson’s ambitions for the club are clear.
When asked where he’d like the club to be in another 100 games he said: “League Two. That’s our ambition – it’s a very high ambition but I don’t see why not.
“The likelihood is it probably won’t happen but we’ve got to set our sights as high as we can.”
