FOLLOWING Wrexham’s 3-0 home defeat to Macclesfield in the Conference Premier last night, here are five things we learned:

1) Macclesfield are in the play-off hunt

Maybe this is finally the year The Silkmen get back into the Football League. Macc may be seven points away from the play-off spots, but if they can turn tonight into a string of consistent performances and utilise their games in hand, then they have every possibility of going up. The true test of these credentials though will be the double header against league leaders Tranmere Rovers; win both of them, and Macc will become a predatory threat to sides such as Barrow and Lincoln.

2) Wrexham are in crisis

Are Wrexham too big to go down? If their performance last night was anything to go by, certainly not. Two defeats in a row, and only two wins in their last 10 have now cut them adrift from the top half; just nine points above the relegation zone. Although teams such as Braintree and Guiseley are weaker on paper, they will be used to the survival fight. Something The Dragons have little experience of.

3) Danny Rowe is the best player in non-league on form

Macclesfield’s Danny Rowe has been a clinical talisman for The Silkmen since joining in 2015. Another scintillating performance, where he added his sixth goal of the season, means certain discussions may arise regarding the player of the year awards and other accolades. It would be nothing more than he deserves though, since his dribbling and ball control are a cut above this division, and possibly even league two. Ironically, the biggest threat to Danny Rowe for that crown is his namesake from AFC Fylde, who has a habit of scoring goal of the month worthy goals weekly.

4) Macc’s away run rolls on:

While Macc have been in good form, a large portion of that is down to their performances away from The Moss Rose. The Silkmen have now lost just one of their last nine games on the road, and only three since the start of the season. This was their most dominant display in a while, however, and with a difficult trip to Prenton Park in the coming weeks, John Askey’s men will have to count on every ounce of form they have.

5) Wrexham should have tried harder to get John Askey

It is ironic that John Askey’s men put in one of their best displays of the season against a team their manager nearly joined. Askey was heavily linked to be Gary Mills replacement, even being bookies favourite at one point; however, The Dragons took a chance on former player Dean Keates. The new manager has struggled to find his feet, as Wrexham continue their march down the table. Although, looking at how strong The Silkmen have become under Askey, it makes you wonder if the result, and Wrexham’s fortunes, would be a lot brighter if he was sitting in their dugout.
