DEFENDERS Abbie McManus and Megan Campbell have both signed deals with Manchester City Women.

The players, both aged 23, have shown potential despite missing a majority of the club’s double-winning season due to serious injuries.

Prestwich born McManus is the Blues’ longest serving player and has been with the club since they were an amateur side, but this is her first professional deal with City.

However, she suffered an ankle injury in August.

Speaking to the Manchester City Women’s website, she said: “I’ve been here at the club for eight years and I’m happy to be making it nine! It was a nice touch to finish off rehab.

“I was devastated to get injured – I had been in the team, playing every game – but it’s just part of football I guess.”

Irish defender Campbell joined Manchester City in February this year from Florida State University, but she too has suffered with injuries.

Also talking to the City website, she said: “I’m pleased. This year hasn’t been good for me in terms of injuries but I’m happy to get the extension and hopefully, prove myself in the team once again.”

In an interview with the MEN, their coach Nick Cushing said he has seen enough promise to sign them up as part of the team’s future:

“We know there is potential for their contributions to be even greater and it was a priority for us to keep hold of our key players- even before signing any new ones.

“We’re really pleased to secure Megan and Abbie on new contracts. Young players are this team’s future, although they have already contributed massively through the season.”
