THIRTEEN new special constables have joined Greater Manchester Police as the service continues to look to bolster its ranks.

The special constables were sworn in at an Attestation Ceremony at Sedgley Park Training Centre in Prestwich last Friday.

All of the new recruits received full police training and have the same powers of arrest as full-time officers, the only difference being the volunteer nature and amount of hours worked by special constables.

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Jim Battle said: “Volunteers are the backbone of policing, and Special Constables are a demonstration that Greater Manchester people are prepared to give their time, experience and knowledge to make our communities safer and stronger. On behalf of local people, I thank them for their contribution and commitment, and wish them all the best in their career.”

The need for special constables is as pressing now as ever before, as funding cuts to public services are announced across Manchester with increased regularity.

The Home Office cut a grant to the GMP by £2.4million late last year, with recent accounts stating the GMP must find savings worth £29.6 million by next month and a further £37million by March 2020.

Anyone interested in applying for a special constable role can check eligibility on the Greater Manchester Police official website or email Special.Constabulary@gmp.police.uk for more information.
