Two days before Varsity, the Salford University’s men’s football seconds became league champions, Molly Jacobsen-Hunt gets the reaction.
Salford University’s men’s football seconds took on UCLan’s fifth team on Monday night for the title of British Universities and Colleges Sport.
Until they met with Bangor University men’s seconds, the boys started off strong in the season, winning games consecutively, giving them hope that they would win the league.
Fortunately for the boys, after their defeats against Chester and Liverpool, they were able to pull it back and win their last three key games.
With the final score being 7-4 to Salford, the lads were ecstatic with their win after the hard work they had to put in.

Joey Payne, social secretary and football player for the team, said: “It wasn’t an easy game at all, the team we needed to beat were bottom of the league and we only won 7-4.
“They made us work really hard, scored 3 very good goals and we scored an own goal making it more difficult.”
This win came at a great time for Salford University’s men’s football, as this Wednesday they take on Chester in Varsity at home.
Joey added: “If we’d lost or drawn last night, Chester would have won the league, so it was nice to get one over on them so close to varsity.”
This win means a lot for the club because it means a promotion.

Joey explained that even though he is now in third year and will be graduating university this year, he looks forward to seeing what the remainder of the winning squad will do for the club.
Unfortunately, this was the only cup win for Salford’s seconds as they were knocked out of the Northern Conference Plate in the quarter finals when they went out to Liverpool on penalties.
