A BOLTON MP has said that thousands of children may have been born with deformities due to the drug Primodos.
The pregnancy test was offered to women in the 1960s and 1970s, but it had severe side effects.
Yasmin Qureshi, the Member of Parliament for Bolton South East, has said that the scale is now bigger than first thought.
Ms Qureshi said: “This is only the tip of the iceberg.
“I think there’s thousands out there who have disabilities as a result of this drug.”
Ms Qureshi has criticised the medical regulator for lack of action, saying that they were first notified about the potential link in 1967, but did not issue any warning until June 1975.
The MP said: “Initially, from what I saw, the Committee on Safety of Medicines seems to have known this drug was causing problems but did nothing, completely nothing.
“It was years and years later before they said it should come off the market.”
Ms Qureshi is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Oral Hormone Pregnancy Tests, which is investigating Primodos.
The campaign has been picked-up by Sky who have created a documentary looking into the issue.
