Britain’s new 12-sided pound coin comes into circulation today with the Royal Mint declaring it to be the “most secure coin” in the world.

It is legal tender immediately, but old pound coins will stay in circulation until  October 15.

People are being encouraged to use or bank their old pound coins before this date, as many of them will be used in making the new coins.

The Royal Mint has tweeted a map of all the places that are being given the new pound coins – including four locations in Manchester.

The coin is harder to counterfeit because of several things: not just the new shape, but the two metals it will be made of.

It is gold-coloured on the outside, and silver in the middle, rather like the one Euro coin.

The coins also have a hologram image that changes from a ‘£’ symbol to the number ‘1’ when the coin is seen from different angles.
