A one minute documentary about Oxford Road, Europe’s busiest bus route, has been nominated for a Sony Award.
Ryan McNulty, 21, the creator of the short-film, chose the subject so he could stick to his daily routine after finding he only had a week to enter the competition.
“I chose the bus route because I saw that I only had a week to enter something and focusing on the bus route meant I could film everything while sticking to my routine.
“Sony responded well to the idea, they thought it was a fresh idea and the most unique thing about Manchester that is appealing to a wide audience.
“I thought it’s better make something than to not.”
Ryan, originally from Telford in Shropshire, is a third year Filmmaking student at Manchester Metropolitan University. If he wins the competition he will receive a top of the range Sony camera, which will help kickstart his budding career in the film industry.
“Winning would be a great achievement but it would also help to make my final major film which will preview at the MSA Film Festival at HOME in June,” Ryan continued.
The worldwide competition means much of Ryan’s competitors have quickly reached a wide audience, and with voting based on YouTube ‘likes’, Ryan’s family and friends have rallied together to support him.
“There aren’t many entries. The sixty second documentary format is quite difficult but I think mine is different in that I’m not trying to tell a story or shoot a person.”
“It’s great to get some recognition. A lot of the time you’re doing something like film-making with little success.
“My dad thinks I won’t get a proper job if I’m making films so this has given me more confidence to believe in myself and what I’m doing.”
Ryan will find out if he has been shortlisted for the award on March 22.
