Fans invade pitch as Bolton Wanderers win emphatic promotion

FANS were unable to contain their excitement at the Bolton Wanderers imminent win, running onto the pitch in the final three minutes of Sunday’s game against Peterborough. 

The thrilling 3-0 victory against Peterborough in front of a home crowd of 22,000 fans, packed into the Macron Stadium, saw Bolton bounce straight back to the Championship, after being relegated last season.

Jem Karacan bagged the first goal 22 minutes in, much to the relief of the fans who were hoping for at least one point, for any chance of automatic promotion.

After a few dangerous attacks and half-hearted attempts from the Bolton Wanderers, Peterborough tried to fight back, but with no luck.

Beavers and Wheater were once again too much for the opposition, as they have been on most occasions this season. It comes as no surprise that they have had the best defensive record in a 46 game season in the club’s history.

If the second goal wasn’t quite enough to cement the Bolton Wanderers victory, the third unattested goal was definitely able to settle any doubts, with fans ready to celebrate on the pitch from the 80th minute.

Some fans however couldn’t contain their excitement and invaded the pitch in the 3 minutes of added time before being sent back to the stands.

The fans were allowed return after the final whistle.

The promotion into the Championship seems a long way away from this time last year, when the club was about to go into liquidation with a huge debt of £172.9 million and was relegated into League One for the first time since 1993.

After just one season in League One, Bolton are back in the Championship, where they were for four seasons from 2012/13 to 2015/16, having previously being in the Premier League for 10 years.

Their long history is full of highs and lows since their formation in 1874.

With the name Christ Church Football Club, they had their best years between the 1920’s and 1950’s, and worst run between the end of the 50’s into the mid 1990’s.

After a few good years in the 2000s the newly promoted club are looking to regain their place in the top tier of English football.
