Man charged after five-year-old boy is hit by car in Salford

A man has been charged after the car he was driving left a five-year-old boy fighting for his life in Salford. 

The young boy was left in a critical condition following the incident, which took place on Stern Avenue, in Ordsall, at around 7pm on Saturday.

The boy was immediately taken to hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

Gavin Higgins, of no fixed address, has been charged with driving without insurance, driving otherwise than in accordance with a license and aggravated vehicle taking.

He is due to appear in court on October 23.

The car involved in the incident was a grey Kia Cee’d.

Mr Higgins is reported to have stopped at the scene.

Police Constable Suzanne Keenan of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This is a tragic incident that has left a young boy in a critical condition in hospital, and our thoughts are with his family and we have specially-trained officers supporting them.

“If you saw what happened, or were driving in the area and have dash-cam footage, I would urge you to get in touch with officers.”

Greater Manchester Police launched an investigation and continue to appeal for any witnesses or anyone with further information to come forward.
