Leaders of the Action on Antibiotic Drug Resistance in Salford have advised
people with a cold or flu to ‘stay home’ rather than seek antibiotics.
The response came after it was estimated that 5,000 people die as a result of drug-resistant
infections in the UK.
Public Health England (PHE) told the BBC this morning: “We don’t need antibiotics for common conditions.”
The medical director at PHE went on to say: “The majority of us will get infections from time to time and will recover because of our own immunity.”
Roger Harrison from Action on Antibiotic Drug Resistance at Manchester University said
it is impossible for antibiotics to work against coughs and colds.
Lecture in Antimicrobial Resistance at the University of Salford, Joe Latimer said: “The best
thing to do is just to wait it out.”
