COMEDIAN Peter Kay will open a Salford theatre which is to be home to a new company led by artistic director Jim Cartwright.

The New Adelphi theatre, at the University of Salford, will be opened by alumnus Kay on Friday December 1.

The Bolton-born star will be joined by his Car Share co-star Sian Gibson who is also a Salford University graduate.

There will also be a world premiere by renowned playwright Jim Cartwright.

The Jim Cartwright Theatre Company, a newly formed theatre group dedicated to undiscovered Northern talent, will be based at the new Salford University building.

Cartwright is the honorary artistic director of the New Adelphi Theatre and has been writing a new series of plays that will be performed at the theatre over the next few years.

He will also be providing masterclasses for students to have the opportunity to work alongside himself and his theatre company.

Mark Fox, organiser of the New Adelphi opening, said: “He will be opening the building but how he does and how he chooses to do it will be in Peters own inevitable style but I’m sure we’ll all absolutely love it.

“I think it’s important that the current students can see the opportunity of where they can get up to, what they can achieve and what other people who have come here have been able to achieve, world renowned success”

The event is sold out and even over sold!

The organisers have had to open a 100 capacity seating area with a viewing screen as there was such high demand for the event.

The pioneering new building will feature the latest start of the art facilities.

The building will be home to: fashion, art, design, music, performance, english, politics and contemporary history.
