STUDENTS from the University of Salford held It’s a Laugh! fundraiser, an evening of live music and comedy at the Old Pint Pot pub in an effort to raise money for CALM, a charity combating suicide.
The lineup of performers at the It’s a Laugh! fundraiser, included 6 comics doing stand-up and a pair of musicians who played the intermissions. The event was sold out online, and over the evening the management collected more than £600.
On their website, the charity writes: “The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is an award-winning charity dedicated to preventing male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. In 2015, 75% of all UK suicides were male.”
One of the comedians at the event, Ash Preston from Warrington, spoke about the appeal of live comedy and music saying that: “People just want to enjoy themselves and they want to put a bit of money in a bucket, which they should all do, but at the same time it’s really about enjoying themselves.
“We’re here for no money we’re just here to perform. It’s enjoyable just because you want to help something. It’s a gig, but at the same time we’re also really hoping that we can help people.”
Josh Macauley, another comic at the event said that he felt that comedy was “another way of raising money that wasn’t super serious or super sad. There’s a collective joy in comedy and music that you don’t really get in other art forms, so it lends itself to charity quite well.”
