The University of Salford has eleven nominees shortlisted for the prestigious Royal Television Society (RTS) awards.
The shortlist ranges from hard-hitting journalism investigating human trafficking to an underwater children’s television programme.
Journalism’s Martina Moscariello was nominated in the news category for her Life in Europe piece which looks at the European migration crisis.
In her story Martina highlights the epidemic, as she travels to the Italian island of Lampedusa, which is now known as a point of call for migrants trying to cross into Europe from North Africa.
During her piece Martina speaks to those who are living in refugee camps, who have made the dangerous trip across the Mediterranean.
Aleksandra Todorova has also been shortlisted in the short feature category for her piece Human Trafficking: Getting Trapped.
Aleksandra travels to Bulgaria to speak to a women who was forced into prostitution by traffickers and becoming ‘trapped’.
Aleksandra and Martina both graduated with first class degrees from BA Journalism: Broadcast last summer and have since worked for ITN and 5 News.
Jennifer Smith, Third year BA Journalism: Broadcast student has also been nominated in the news category for her piece #MeToo Manchester. The story focuses on an interview with a rape victim who waived her right to anonymity to speak about the impact of the attack.
A Third year Television and Radio student, Harry Whitehead has been shortlisted in the short feature category for his drama Wanderlust.
Kate Troy, who graduated from Television and Radio last summer who now works at the BBC, has been shortlisted in the comedy and entertainment category for her children’s programme, Subventurers.
Kate’s fellow graduates Rebecca Scott and Aneela Shakoor have also been nominated.
Animation graduates Holly Petrie, Scott Tate, Mica Henry and Kieran Willoughby have been shortisted in the animation category for Little Seed, which is a short stop-motion film.
Professor Allan Walker, Dean of the University of Salford’s School of Arts and Media is thrilled with the nominations:“All of our nominees are fantastic ambassadors for the University, showcasing some of the high quality work coming out of our many creative and digital programmes.
“We’re delighted to have seen so many nominations this year from across such a wide range of areas and we wish the best of luck to all of the talented students and graduates who have been shortlisted.”
The Royal Television Society awards ceremony will be held at The Lowry in Salford Quays on March 12.
