Salford has been shortlisted in the first ever Britain’s best walking neighbourhood award.

The award was set up by walking charity The Ramblers to celebrate walking neighbourhoods that cater to urban walkers.

The popular Peel Park in Salford

Salford has been shortlisted alongside nine other towns which include Kirby Stephen in Cumbria, Hackney, Hasting Old Town, and Town Moor.

Urban sights such as Media City UK and the Manchester ship canal, alongside more rural areas like Peel Park are among some of the reasons Salford has been shortlisted for the award.

Stuart Maconie the president of Ramblers said Salford has ‘Sport, it’s got culture, it’s got leisure, it’s got history.’

Ramblers work to protect and expand popular walking destinations whilst promoting walking for health and pleasure.

Recent research from Oxford University and the University of Hong Kong looked at 430,000 people living in 22 UK cities and found that more walkable neighbourhoods are associated with reduced risk of hypertension and lower blood pressure.

The authors of the research said that: “Well-designed walkable cities of today will be healthy cities of tomorrow.”

The Chief executive of Ramblers, Vanessa Griffiths, stated that many of our towns and cities are designed without people in mind making them difficult to navigate on foot which is an issue that needs to change.

She said:  “Our award showcases areas that are already doing this. The ten shortlisted neighbourhoods have been designed or improved to prioritise people on foot. We’re celebrating these areas, and asking more local authorities to think about how they could make small retrofits in design to improve walkability, to help improve the health and well-being of residents.”

You can Vote for Britain’s best walking neighborhood on the Ramblers website until the 14th March.
