The Cause, written by Natalie McGrath and concerning an imagined meeting between Millicent Fawcett and Emmeline Pankhurst is visiting Salford Arts Theatre tonight at 7:30PM.

The production is performed by Dreadsnought South West and focuses on an imagined meeting between Emmeline Pankhurst and Millicent Fawcett as a pivotal moment in modern feminism.

Costing £10 concession, the play comes as the 100th year anniversary for some women getting the vote is around the corner on the 14th of December 2018.]

Michelle Ridings, a fellow Mancunian acts as Emmeline Pankhurst in the production.

She says they felt a “responsibility to do our upmost, to do the best job we possibly can to do these women justice.

“A period of time when you look back and there’s hardly any stories about what was going on. You start digging and you realise, understandably so, the women were always there, they never stopped, it’s a big eye opener”.

Roni Ellis, Joint artistic director a Salford Arts Theatre explained she thinks the play is important for the community of Salford because of the presence of in this area of, “well known people who were in the socialist and suffragette movement”.

“Women were always there, they never stopped it’s a big eye opener.”

After the play contacted the theatre, they say there were a number of reasons why they felt they couldn’t turn it down. such as the subject matter and the importance of educating those who may be unaware of a big part of history, especially for women.

The Cause will also be shown in Liverpool on the 17th October and Manchester on the 19th October for its tour of the North of England, with its finale in Exeter being on the centenary of some women getting the vote.
