Salford City striker Adam Rooney has become the leading goal scorer in England’s top six divisions so far this season after scoring at home against Havant & Waterlooville on Saturday.

The centre forward took a huge gamble and left top division Scottish Premier League side, Aberdeen, to sign for fifth-tier English club, Salford City, on 19 July 2018 for an undisclosed fee.

Rooney has hit the ground running since his move to the Peninsula Stadium, scoring a total of 19 goals in 26 appearances at Salford.

In his youth, Rooney began playing for his local Dublin team, Crumlin United before joining Stoke City U19s in 2005. This move resulted in him being promoted to Stoke’s first team a year later.

During his time at the club, Rooney played on loan for numerous clubs; Yeovil Town (2007), Chesterfield FC (2007) and Bury FC (2008).

He also became Stoke’s youngest ever hat-trick scorer in his second full appearance for the club against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Rooney moved again in July 2008, this time to Scotland to play for Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC, where he scored 53 goals in 120 appearances over three seasons at the club.

He was named the “Irn Bru Phenominal” Scottish First Division Player of the Year for the 2009/10 season.

While Rooney was still playing for Inverness, he achieved nine caps for the Republic of Ireland.

When his contract with Inverness expired, Rooney moved back English football on a free transfer to Birmingham City FC to play in the Championship in 2011.

During his time with Birmingham he also played on loan for Swindon Town until May 2013.

Two months later, Rooney joined Oldham Athletic before leaving to join Scottish Premier League team, Aberdeen FC on 23 January 2014.

He stayed at Aberdeen for four and a half seasons, scoring 88 goals in 197 appearances, one of which was the winning penalty in the 2014 Scottish League Cup Final, that gave the club their first piece of silverware in 19 years.

The 30-year-old has also achieved the title of Scottish Professional player of the month in February 2014 and earned himself a bronze medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival 2005.

Rooney has now spent five months at Salford City, being the top goal scorer in the top six divisions in England so far this season.
