Walkden GPs have won the gold award for excellence in LGBT healthcare.
The Pride in Practice award for Walkden Medical Centre, Hodge Road, Walkden, recognises doctors’ surgeries which provide support around gender identity, trans status and sexual orientation monitoring.
The quality assurance service strengthens and develops primary care services’ relationship with their LGBT patients within the local community, funded by the NHS and Greater Manchester health and social care.
Andrew Gilliver, Pride in Practice co-coordinator at the LGBT Foundation, said: “Pride in Practice offers free training to GPs, doctors, optometrists and pharmacists and ensures that practices effectively and confidently meet the needs of their LGBT patients and offers ongoing support and information resources for each practice.”
Currently, 1.9 million patients across greater Manchester are registered at pride in practice registered GP practices.
The GP practices have been able to support their local communities by putting up posters with LGBT information on them or by being able to discuss issues regarding a person’s sexual orientation and gender identity.
This can help people to reduce any potential fears LGBT patients may have about homophobia, biphobia and transphobia within those services.
The award is attained through a short self-assessment process which shows the strengths of each GP practice.
