Five of this year’s Spirit of Salford Community Awards finalists have described their delight at being nominated.

The Spirit of Salford Community Awards celebrates the work of community groups, volunteers and public servants who have helped improve communities across Salford.

Walkden Community

Founded in 2011, Walkden Community aim to discuss local issues, share local events, and also hope to promote positive community spirit across Salford. The organisation host and promote many events across the community, and have previously been runners up in the City West Community Group Awards.

A spokesperson from the organisation has expressed their delight at the nomination for Community Group of the Year, saying: “Walkden Community volunteers are honoured to be nominated for Community Group of the Year. We are very lucky in Salford to have so many fantastic community groups going the extra mile for the area they live and the people in their community.”

They further added: “It is lovely to be recognised for the work we do on the page and the events we work hard to plan. Seeing the community come together in a positive way at our events is why we do what we do and we will continue to work hard to raise community pride and spirit.”

Angela Harris

One finalist for Volunteer of the Year, Angela Harris, is known as a dedicated volunteer by Salford Healthy Communities, who she has worked with for 6 years, and Alcohol Health Champion, who she worked with as part of the Communities in Charge of Alcohol (CICA) initiative.

She spoke of her nomination, saying: “I love the thought that I’m getting a reward it makes me very proud. I have been a volunteer for 6 years and help people understand about cancer and having strokes and heart failure and also talk about dementia.

“I think the people of Salford deserve to be given this health information to help them and I take blood presumes with my team to help stop strokes also. I love my work and never wanted it to end but sadly it is ending but I will keep on volunteering for a new team. It as also kept me alive doing this job.”

Youth Unity

Based in Little Hulton, Youth Unity is a youth organisation that wants to inspire a younger generation, and unite a community. For the last two years, they have offered sessions, and hosted events, which they believe will improve their young people’s self-esteem, self-concept and more. They have also began a new project to help increase awareness about the danger of loan sharks to young people.

Two members, Karen and Claire, spoke of their delight at the nomination, saying: “We are extremely proud to be nominated for the Community Group of the Year Award. It is an amazing feeling to be part of something as great as Youth Unity and a privilege to be part or our young peoples lives .

“Offering somewhere warm and safe to go, someone to talk to and help give awareness, opportunities and enrichment to make a difference in their lives is the least we can do to help them grow into being a better version of themselves. We have been supported by LHBL and partnered with SCL to deliver sessions and thank them for their help in supporting our young people.”

Start Inspiring Minds

Last year marked the organisations 25 year of working alongside the people of Salford, and saw the creation of their campaign ‘Reach Out-Start to End Suicide‘, which has been nominated for Best Community Safety Project. The project aimed to commemorate those who have lost their lives to suicide, whilst also hoping to save future lives, and build resilience within the community, which they believe can help end stigma.

The organisations’ Chief Executive Officer, Bernadette Conlon, spoke about the nomination, saying: “This award represents all of the lives that Start has supported over the last 26 years working in Salford, whether they have been a member, a volunteer or staff. Start wouldn’t be what it is today without them, I humbly accept this nomination on their behalf.”

Salford Dadz

Salford Dadz is a Little Hulton-based organisation, created by fathers and grandfathers, who want to help and support the well-being of fathers and father figures within the community and, in turn, create a more positive outcome for their children and their families.

Steve from the organisation has spoken about their excitement of being nomination for Community Group of the Year, saying: “Little Hulton are thrilled and humbled by the nomination and by being selected as finalists.

“We know quite a few of the other finalists, three of the five groups in our category being from Little Hulton which is brilliant and a testament to the great things going on in our area. It does gives a pause for thought though over who to vote for ourselves!”
