Yesterday was a fantastic day for the University of Salford mens football teams as the first side were confirmed as league champions, whilst the second team thrashed Bangor 1-4 to set up a title decider next week.

The second team travelled across the border to Bangor, knowing that only a win would do if they wanted to keep their title hopes alive.

Supported on the trip by members of the first team and former players, Salford got off to a tough start in the extremely poor conditions.

Conditions were poor throughout, with the rain pouring down for large parts of the match.

Bangor took the lead early on after a good passing moved was topped off with a beautiful curling finish past goalkeeper Charlie Stranks.

Salford struggled to get into the game and turned to substitute Isaac Jones in search of an equaliser. Sure enough that is exactly what they got, Jones levelled the game just before half time.

Salford came out looking a completely different side in the second half. The blue and yellows looked composed on the ball and took control of the match. Jones netted his second of the game when his corner was deflected into the back of the Bangor goal, giving Salford the lead.

Salford made sure of all 3 points with just under 10 minutes to go, Milan Jaizani converting a powerful header, giving the goalkeeper no chance.

Members of the first and second teams celebrate after the match

There was time for even more celebration for the visitors. Salford were awarded a penalty in the last minute of the game. Captain Jamie Chadwick stepped up and cooly converted to give Salford a deserved 1-4 victory.

That wasn’t it for the drama though. As fans and players rejoiced in the centre of the pitch, knowing that a win next week would ensure the league title for the seconds, the lads were greeted with the best of news. Due to other results in the first league, it was revealed that the Salford first team had successfully won the league title, without even kicking a ball on the day.

A win for the seconds next Wednesday will ensure two league titles for the team in what has been a superb season so far for Salford.
