Salford Red Devils beat Hull KR 17-16 last night to finish third in the Super League.

Salford head coach Ian Watson toasted his players after Krisnan Inu kicked a match-winning drop goal against Hull KR in extra time.

It was Salford’s eighth straight win, meaning they have taken over Warrington into third place.

Watson said:

“The boys showed a good work ethic and stuck to the processes which have got us here in the second half and the boys turned the tide.

“We go to Wigan now, who along with ourselves are probably the form teams in the competition. We take every week as it comes, that’s what we’ve been doing for the last nine weeks.

“Everyone wrote us off at the start of this season as the team along with London that would be relegated. People didn’t expect us to be here.

“Hull KR were really composed in the first half playing the right game. At half-time, we spoke about the need to mirror them.”

Hull KR boss Tony Smith was relieved that defeat had not proved costly with London dropping back to the Championship.

He said: “There was a lot of effort from a lot of players but at least I can say we didn’t play a team that didn’t put their full strength team out against us this season.

“I think it would have left a bad taste.”
