Forward Adam Rooney has stressed the importance of Salford City ‘not getting carried away’, as the Ammies entered a purple patch after two consecutive victories.
The League Two new-boys, who had only won twice in their opening 11 fixtures, have secured back-to-back wins in the Football League for the first time in their history.
Rooney, who has hit a streak of form himself after contributing two goals in his last four outings – including a first league goal at the Peninsula Stadium since April – has called on his teammates to keep their focus.
He said:
“As you can imagine, the lads are on a high, there’s a buzz around the place again. I think the gaffer’s probably said it before in interviews; we never really get too down when we lose and it’s important we don’t get carried away that we’ve won a couple again either. You’re only as good as your last result really.
“We want to take the confidence from the last two games and the clean sheets into next week and hopefully build on that, but we won’t do anything different than we have been doing.
“Even though we weren’t on a great run and we were drawing games and we’d lost a couple, we were still doing the right things in training.”
The Irish striker, who joined the Ammies last summer after making the switch across the border from Aberdeen, said that despite the poor run of form, the mood in the dressing room had not been affected.
“The atmosphere around the place in training as a group was still good because it’s actually a very tight-knit group where all the lads get on really well.
“The gaffer and skip (Assistant Manager Chris Lucketti) work hard to make sure it’s a good atmosphere around, because the last thing you need is lads breaking off into cliques and groups, and thankfully we don’t have that.
“We knew we had that character in the group because we’d shown it last year when we went through a sticky spell.
“We didn’t start last season great, then went on a brilliant run, then had that spell where we lost six or seven games in a row and came back from that again and went on another good run.
“There’s times throughout the season when you’re going to be disappointed, teams are going to be performing well and results and things will go against you.
“It’s important that all the lads stick together, you believe in what you’re doing and keep doing the right things in training and hopefully – if you keep doing the right things over time – your results will come for you.”
Rooney concluded: “We do what we’ll continue to do since the start of the season. Although the results weren’t brilliant a few weeks ago, hopefully now is the turning point and we can kick on.”
Salford City now head to Northampton Town this weekend in pursuit of their third successive victory in League Two.
