Women with wings

As Black History Month comes to an end, training provider, Women with Wings, ended their celebrations at the Bethany Family Worship Centre in Little Hulton.

On Saturday 26 October, the hall was filled with a number of stalls selling food, clothes and face painting for all ages.

Jasmine Bakhre, founder and CEO of Women with Wings, said: “The day so far has been brilliant, we’ve got great turnover and a lot of people coming in don’t know what Black History Month is but they’re keen to come and learn.”

A report from Salford CVS stated that those from a Black, minority or ethnic (BAME) background, make up 15 percent of the overall population in Salford.

Jasmine and her team hoped that the day would showcase Salford’s Black community.

She said: “It wasn’t a long time planning and I’m so proud of myself and my team for getting this done in only two months.”

Local businesses from in and around Salford were in attendance including: Neeks Treats, K’s Kandy House and a special performance from dancers, C.M. Stars.

Beatrice Samuels, a member of Women with Wings, held a stall selling hand-made African accessories.

She said: “I think this event will showcase different businesses and most importantly that we can come together.

“As black people we are all united. We’re not just celebrating black people here, we’re also celebrating the community as a whole.”

The money raised from the event will go directly to the Women with Wings organisation which helps women and mothers to start their own businesses, whilst speaking English as a second language.

Beatrice said: “To me, Black History Month celebrates all the achievements of all black people and those from the past who have paved the way for us so we can celebrate that we are a people.”

The organisation is showing no sign of slowing down since the opening of their new business centre earlier this year.

Women with Wings hope that they can host a Black History Month event annually.
