Turnout was low at The Lowry Shopping centre on what was expected to be one of the biggest shopping days of the year

Store bosses were surprised by the lack of customers.

One said: “I am surprised at how bleak it is compared to last years, we have some really good offers on and hopefully it picks up later in the day.”

However according to shoppers, the low turn up is perfect for the best shopping experience.

Laura Green a shopper said: “I love coming here on Black Fridays it’s not as busy as the Trafford centre and it has all of my favorite shops, it’s less hectic.”

The popular shopping holiday Black Friday originated from America, a day after Thanksgiving.

It gained its name Black Friday due to the high volume of shoppers and heavy vehicle traffic that would occur on that day.
