Sale Sharks centre Sam James has admitted that Sunday’s Heineken Champions Cup match against the Exeter Chiefs is a welcome distraction from their indifferent start in the league.
The Sharks have only won two of their opening five matches in the Gallagher Premiership and they will be looking to bounce back from their 20-13 defeat to Worcester last weekend.
“It’s strange having a Premiership match in the middle of the Champions Cup but it allows us to open up for one of the biggest stages in rugby. We want to be showing our best hand and play attacking rugby,” said James.
Steve Diamond’s men won their first Champions Cup match for over 1,000 days a fortnight ago and are looking to record back-to-back wins in the competition for the first time in a decade.
James added: “It would be massive for us. We didn’t get into this competition to just be in it – we want to be reaching those final stages and to do that we will have to win back-to-back games as well as all of our home games.
“There’s no other time to do it than this weekend. We’re ready for it having trained well this week.”
