A Swinton care home has opened a new sensory room to help its residents living with dementia.

The special space at the Fountains care home was officially opened by Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, Charles McIntyre thanks to a Salix Homes Springboard Heroes initiative.

The care home was entered into the competition to become Springboard Heroes 2019, with a prize draw of £1,000.

Mayor McIntyre said: “It was great to see The Fountains and Salix Homes come together to create something special with this new sensory room.

“I really enjoyed my visit and felt privileged to be invited to open the sensory room. It will be a lasting successful addition to The Fountains care home.”

The sensory room will provide a calming environment for residents, particularly those living with dementia.

Dementia is a syndrome usually caused by a variety of brain illnesses that affect memory, thinking, behaviour and ability to perform everyday activities.

The number of people living with dementia worldwide is currently estimated at 50 million and will almost triple by 2050.

Features such as gentle lighting, comfortable furnishings, calming music create a peaceful ambiance for residents.

Home manager Huma Anwar said: ” We all had a wonderful afternoon for our official sensory room opening. The staff and residents all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

“The sensory room is a great addition to the home and the residents are already making the most of their new facilities.”

Sue Sutton, executive director of operations at Salix Homes, said: “The Fountains were one of our four finalists in out Springboard Heroes Awards, with close to 1,000 votes cast by the public.

“The awards are our way of honouring the wonderful work that ordinary people in Salford to every day.

“The Fountains has done a fantastic job renovating the room and we’re thrilled they’ve been able to use the prize money to create such a vital resource for their residents.

“It’s projects like these that make out communities so special.”
