This Christmas, local residents are volunteering along with the Rotary group to come together at Parr Fold Park in Walkden to raise money at their Magical Christmas Event on Friday 13th from 6-7:30pm.
The raised money is to go towards the restoration of the band stand, tennis court and the rock pool within the park.
Organiser, Dianne Walker said Salford has just two original band stands, but the Parr Fold Park stand is unique in its shell shape as opposed to hexagonal. Dianne hopes the money will help to go towards new glass panels and mental frame work.
She said: “its a shame that such a beautiful structure isn’t used for its purpose anymore. Without the panelling it isn’t possible to amplify music the way it once would have, we need to do events like this to show people and the council just how wonderful it could be.”
Dianne explained that the stand had been damaged by the bad weather, neglected and even vandalised by teenagers with drawings. To conceal any damage the volunteers are decorating the stand with homemade garlands made from the parks very own fur trees and berries. Giant candle-lit stars will light up the stand, along with twinkly lights.
She said: “we’ve made all this ourself, it’s so exciting, it’s going to look brilliant.”
In its past, music festivals were held in all seasons on the band stand and the group want to bring its beauty and functionality back. Images from the 1930’s have been provided by Rotary volunteer Audrey Othick which show the stand in its former glory with audiences enjoying music performances from local bands.
To raise money the event is selling hot food and drink, along with carol performances from local school and youth choirs, singalongs with the MAPAS band, a visit from Santa Clause who is also available to take any wish lists. Mulled wine and mince pies are also on offer.
A raffle will also take place with hampers donated from local businesses and charities.
The Magical Christmas Event is open to anyone that wants to get involved. Dianne said: “it’s a free event and we welcome all ages, in all weathers, no matter what, we’ll be here with our spirits high to bring the old and the new community together.”
