In a statement yesterday, the English Football League (EFL) confirmed that clubs have voted by an ‘overwhelming majority’ to curtail the 2019/20 SkyBet League Two season.

After yesterday’s Extraordinary General Meeting, all 71 clubs in the EFL voted on the outcome of the 2019/20 seasons across the three divisions and the majority voted in favour of the EFL Board’s proposal into EFL Regulations, which subsequently meant the following if any of the three divisions were voted to curtail or finish early for any other reason:

  1. Final divisional placings will be determined on unweighted points per game (if required).
  2. Promotion and relegation should be retained.
  3. Play-Offs will be played in all circumstances but will not be extended (beyond four teams).

Following the Extraordinary General Meeting, League Two clubs met and a majority of the 24 clubs in the division voted to end the season.

This means that Swindon Town will be crowned SkyBet League Two champions, and Crewe Alexandra and Plymouth Argyle will secure the second and third automatic promotion places into SkyBet League One.

Cheltenham Town, Exeter City, Colchester United and Northampton Town will compete in the Play-Offs with the following schedule agreed:

  • 1st Legs

Thursday 18th June

Colchester United v Exeter City – 5.15pm

Northampton Town v Cheltenham Town – 7.45pm

  • 2nd Legs

Monday 22nd June

Exeter City v Colchester United – 5.15pm

Cheltenham Town v Northampton Town – 8.00pm

  • Final (Wembley Stadium)

Monday 29th June 7.30pm

Under the agreed proposals, the team finishing 24th, which is Stevenage, will be relegated to the National League on the basis that the EFL Board can be assured that the National League will be back in action for the 2020/21 season.

Speaking after yesterday’s General Extraordinary Meeting, EFL Chair, Rick Parry, said: “Whilst it has always remained the Board’s position to play the remainder of the season where possible, the decision reached at today’s meeting follows a full and considered consultation period with our member Clubs.

“The Board has endeavoured to listen to all views and alternative approaches but understands that the decisions taken will not be met with universal satisfaction from all Clubs.

“Today’s outcome ensures that the League and its Clubs remains as faithful as possible to the previously agreed Regulations and that there is consistency in the approach adopted across the EFL in all divisions if required.

“It is clear that the challenges facing the League from the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic are unprecedented and I thank the contribution of EFL Clubs in making this important determination.”

Salford City will finish their first season in League Two in the top half of the table, as 62.16 points per game secure them 11th position.

Salford City ‘s League Two campaign is over.

The Ammies will hope that they can still have their Wembley trip, with no decision made yet on the final of the Leasing.com Trophy between Salford City and Portsmouth.
