Figures released today show another 154 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Salford.

This has taken the city’s total number of cases to 4,102.

The data was released today by the Department for Health and Social Care in partnership with the Office for National Statistics.

These numbers come shortly after reports of Salford becoming one of the country’s Covid hotspots.

It is topped only by Manchester with 11,157 new cases announced today, an increase of 363.

Nationally, there were 14,162 new cases today with 76 deaths also announced in the last 24 hours.

The figures were released as two of Greater Manchester’s largest universities have moved all teaching online, following a spike of Covid cases.

Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester are understood to have made the decision in an effort to control infection rates.

Face-to-face teaching is still taking place at the University of Salford.

Elsewhere in Greater Manchester cases continue to rise. There were 112 new cases in Bury, whilst numbers in Bolton have risen by 124.

Stockport and Tameside have also seen increases of 134 and 115 respectively.

Wigan has seen an increase with an extra 138 positive cases.

This takes the national total up to 544,275 positive cases.
