Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes’ first game in charge as interim Salford City manager comes in the form of an away trip against Port Vale on Saturday in SkyBet League Two.

The Ammies’ co-owner and former Manchester United star took over as Salford gaffer following the sacking of Graham Alexander yesterday afternoon.

Salford’s previous game was a 2-2 draw with Tranmere Rovers last Saturday on Alexander’s birthday – a game that Salford held a two-goal lead in for 70 minutes before throwing it away minutes before fulltime to gift Rovers a share of the spoils.

Despite the disappointment of drawing a game that was almost theirs for the taking, the Ammies remain unbeaten in the league after five games and occupy 5th place, only three points from top-of-the-table Morecambe.

Salford travel to Vale Park with two wins and three draws under their belt, and a win on Saturday against Port Vale would get Scholes off to the perfect start and bring some positivity into the club during this uncertain time.

The hopeful hosts will be looking to bounce back from the defeat they picked up in their last league game, a 1-0 home loss against Carlisle.

John Askey’s men currently sit in 10th in League Two after five games, with quite a mixed bag of results so far this season.

The Valiants have picked up two wins, one draw and two losses up to now and will hoping they can capitalise on the current uncertainty surrounding the visitors.

Both sides met in August at the latter end of the 2019/20 season and split the points in a 1-1 draw at the Peninsula Stadium. Salford will be hoping for a repeat of their 3-0 victory over The Valiants the last time they visited Vale Park in January.

Port Vale v Salford City kicks off at 3.00pm this coming Saturday 17th October.
