Breastfeeding

A charity is providing positive breastfeeding support classes to families via Zoom.

Breastfeeding Together runs pregnancy sessions all year round and they also have two sessions running on Mother’s Day.

The charity was set up in 2015 to provide positive support to families from pregnancy to early years and beyond.

It was awarded the Queens Voluntary Service award in 2020 which is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities.

Fiona O’Neill, Breastfeeding Together’s charity director, said:  “Accessibility to all women and families is essential to us as a charity. Most of our services are free or donation only to ensure accessibility for as many women as possible.”

The pregnancy information sessions are delivered online via Zoom by experienced Pregnancy Peer Supporters for just a small donation (a minimum of £1). The sessions are friendly, relaxed and informative.

Breastfeeding Together currently offer the following sessions: Breastfeeding, Plan and Prepare for Parenthood, Bonding with your Bump and Baby, Safer Sleep for Babies, Grandparents- what to expect when your children are expecting and Breastfeeding Twins.

The sessions are available for pregnant women and their partners and/or families. For more information, women can go to the website or join the event.

The charity director said it is important to raise the profile of breastfeeding support in the pandemic.

Fiona O’Neill said: “Yes, absolutely, women need breastfeeding support more than ever now. Many midwives and health visitors have been deployed in their roles and therefore women have struggled to access support which is why it’s so essential breastfeeding charities are able to fill the gap in provision and provide essential information and support to women and their families.”

Due to the pandemic, the charity has been unable to run any face to face events but are continuing to run weekly online pregnancy and breastfeeding groups for women.
