Following the victory at Wembley on Saturday, Salford City take on struggling Colchester United at the Peninsula Stadium tonight in League 2. The match will kick-off at 7pm.

Salford will be in high spirits following their win at Wembley in the final of the Papa Johns Trophy final against League One opponents Portsmouth. This should spur them on to a victory against their opposition.

Performances have been dominant for Salford of late but this has not been reflected in results. They have won one and drawn three in their last six games. However, the football they have been playing is a better indicator of their capabilities as a team.

The Ammies are currently at seventh in the table and are primed for a promotion spot.

Colchester has won one in their last 18 games and sits at 20th in the table, not far off of possible relegation.

Their manager, Wayne Brown, believes they simply need to take advantage when they have the upper-hand during games.

“We have to start scoring when we are on top in games. It’s a numbers game, that if we keep creating, goals will come.”

Colchester may also benefit from Salford’s win on Saturday. Wellens men played an extra half an hour on top of the 90 minutes, as well as penalties. As well as this, there was clear jubilant celebrations that may have taken their toll on the Ammies.

This is the third time that this game has been scheduled this season. In January it was postponed due to a frozen pitch. It was postponed again in February due to a waterlogged pitch. Hopefully this time the match will go ahead with no issues.

In terms of the squad, assessments will be made of various players to see if they are able to play.

Tom Clarke and Richie Towell both came off with knocks during the final on Saturday and will be checked to see if they could play, Ian Henderson has been suffering from a bout of non-Covid illness and may play whilst Darren Gibson continues his recovery.

After being ineligible to play at Wembley, Di’Shon Bernard, George Boyd, Paul Coutts, Robbie Gotts, and Tom James are available for selection again.
