Salford Watersports Centre has hosted the launch of a programme to make outdoor swimming as enjoyable as possible.

The Centre, based at Salford Quays, hosted swimmers of all ages and abilities to promote the launch of Beyond Swim, which promotes the benefits of safe and beneficial open water swimming.

The programme has been created by Triathlon England, the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) and Swim England.

Open water swimming has grown in popularity since the first Covid lockdown, with reports from ‘Outdoor Swimmer’ suggesting that ”45% of swimmers swam outside more than usual during 2020.”

With swimming pools inaccessible during the national lockdown, open water swimming became an alternative mode of exercise.

Swimming is not only good for physical health, but mental health too.

Anxiety UK reported that ”swimming, for even half an hour at a time, is known to be effective in lowering incidences of depression and anxiety and improve sleeping patterns.”

As COVID restrictions ease, indoor pools have reopened. However, outdoor swimmers refuse to go back inside as we inch closer towards summer.

Now with the new ‘Beyond Swim’ initiative, these swimmers can enjoy all the benefits of open water swimming with ease.

Part of the initiative aims to verify venues, ensuring they are of the highest standard for partakers.

Whilst also providing opportunities for discounts and rewards for their participation, such as donations to charity or merchandise discounts.

Speaking on the commitment, Andy Salmon Triathlon England CEO, said:

”Beyond Swim is all about supporting venues and building a community of open water swimmers of all abilities so that an ever growing number of people can realise the joy of open water swimming.”

Also, with the RLSS’ involvement, participants can relax knowing the events are safeguarded to the highest standard.

Lee Heard, Charity Director for the RLSS:

”Being in open water is a fantastic experience and making that experience a safe one, is what brings people back for more.”

As the temperature starts to rise, why not see if open water swimming is for you? Salford Quays is available for outdoor swimming as well as kayak or wake boarding hire.
