The Kings Arms is celebrating black excellence with Curtis Cole’s play ‘Remembering the way – A love letter to Moss side’

The Salford boozer is a famed pub, featured as the location to many TV productions such as Fresh Meat, Cracker and the Hairy Bikers.

The reinstatement of The Kings Arms cabaret style theatre space takes the limelight this time. The refurbishments upstairs allow for live comedy, theatre and performance art on a weekly basis.

The show ‘Remembering the Way’ taking place this October explores the rich history of Moss Side, Manchester. Writer, Curtis Coles states that the play touches on themes that challenge institutional bias that still impact people to this day and the overall message enforces the importance of family.

Written and directed by Curtis Cole, the show allows the audience to experience the life of a black man, diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimers trying to reconnect and make good with his estranged son and past.

Actor and writer Curtis Cole says: “It is smashing the stereotype and cracking the idea of the black man stereotype – lazy and doesn’t work, and showcases a hardworking black man who made his way through and got on with living his life and pushing through with his family”.

The play is backed by a throwback soundtrack that fuels 90s nostalgia. This builds up the reflection of social issues at the time and currently such as social care funding.

Colin Connor, producer, Rising Moon Productions says: “One of the main subjects of the play is Alzheimer’s, and the play hinges on the idea of getting the main protagonist into care. Recently, we have had the whole conservative hike on tax -taxing the people who cannot generally afford the care, so it addresses this issue especially within the black community, and I think that makes it relevant with all that has been going on recently,”
