The month of October marks many fundraisers for cancer charities, including Go Sober which is in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Michelle Gray, 38 and from Salford, has raised over £300 already for cancer awareness, in exchange for no alcohol for the entire month so she can help the cause and cut down alcohol.

“I’ve been working from home now for two years so obviously, like most people, it has been a bit of a tough time.

“So more often than not, drinking a lot more than normal. Normally it was just weekends we’d drink but due to, I don’t know if it’s the stress or the lockdown, I just seem to be drinking a lot more.”

The pandemic has had a huge impact on people living with cancer in the UK, with thousands of people having their treatments delayed.

In order to keep the funds coming, fundraisers are vital.

According to Macmillan, by the end of 2016 there were more than 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK and it is set to increase year on year.

Michelle went on to say: “we’ve lost quite a lot of family members, I’d say over the last three to five years, all down to cancer. So, we’re helping raise money to help the families really.”

£1,396,488 has already been raised for Macmillan this October, with 34,155 contributors.

“To be honest I was shocked because I was only sort of expecting maybe like £5 from a couple of people each.

“But I think again, because of lockdown, people realise there’s not a lot of charity going on so a lot of people tend to sponsor a bit more.”
