A mental wellbeing app has been launched by the University of Salford at a walk in Peel Park today.

US Sorted! has been funded by the University in collaboration with mental health charity Mind in Salford.

The app has a focus on improving the physical and mental wellbeing of staff and students at the University.

Founder, Dr. Alex Fenton, has said: “It’s angled a bit more towards people’s general wellness- producing content around that and tracking steps, working with [fitness tracker] wristbands”

The app tracks its users’ step counts and creates league tables to encourage healthy competition.

It also features a range of collectable badges users can collect by scanning various QR codes around the campus.

The app does not only aim to benefit university staff and students however. Dr. Fenton said: “We also partnered with Mind in Salford so every 1,000 steps we make a donation to Mind”

A budget of £1,000 has been set for donations, but Dr. Fenton hopes that further funding can be secured in the future.

After a soft launch in September the app recorded more than 13 million steps and raised £135 for Mind in Salford.

Dr. Fenton is a lecturer in Digital Business at Salford University and had previously worked on a similar project aimed at Salford Red Devils fans to improve their fitness. Following a grant his work expanded to Glasgow Rangers fans, through the app FanFit.

The app is available to download on iOS and Android.
