“It brings the community together for all those that have lost loved ones” – Salford church hosts Walkden Poppy Trail for Remembrance Day
riends of St. Mary’s Park in Walkden are hosting a Poppy Trail this Saturday at 11am.
The drop-in session will allow visitors to paint either a poppy or forget-me-not flower in memory of those affected by the pandemic.
Everyone is welcome to attend the drop-in session and the following service, with more information available on the Friends of St. Mary’s Facebook page and in the Salford Now article

“People in Salford are very generous” – the Salford charity keeping residents warm this winter
Charities in Salford are appealing for donations of old winter coats.
Salford-based Rotary clubs and other charities have joined the national ‘Wrap Up UK’ campaign for the second time, after beginning their collection boxes in 2019.
The campaign has collection boxes around Salford for people to donate their old winter coats to those without.

“We’re celebrating all souls, the intention is to pray for all our departed relatives and friends” – Requiem Mass at Salford Cathedral
Salford Cathedral to host a special ‘All Soul’s Requiem Mass’ this evening, featuring the choir singing the famous Fauré’s Requiem
The Requiem mass is an annual event held by Salford Cathedral every November and is to remember those we have lost in the past year.

Father Ignatius of Salford Cathedral said: “Its always on the 2nd of November. This is widely recognised across Catholicism as “All Souls’ Day”, we pray for all souls. Its a date that’s been set aside for centuries now.”
All souls day originally was for reflecting on the souls that were in purgatory. But now the day is reserved to reflect upon all our lost friends and relatives.

“Dusty’s ability to fill me with joy and to show me kindness and love, every day that helped me in ways I didn’t realise” – Salford Author releases new book about a disabled boy and his dog, saving the world
Robert Martin, an author living in Broughton released his first book, Joe and Dusty Save the World last week.
The story follows a boy with learning disabilities and his best friend – and carer dog – Dusty, saving the world from an alien invasion.
The book is hopefully going to be one of four in the series. Another book will be about cleaning the planet and another idea based on getting their new rescue dog, and about what happens when somebody different comes into your world. Wilson says the idea is based on immigration but shown from the point of view of dogs.

Swinton Lions squad unveiling: Jose Kenga re-signs, Martyn Ridyard leaves and exciting young half-back Lewis Else comes in from Widnes Vikings
Swinton Lions have been unveiling their squad for the 2022 season.
It’s been a busy few weeks for Swinton Lions as they put together a squad, hopefully, capable of bouncing straight back up to the Championship after relegation last season.
Most recently, they have announced that forward Jose Kenga has extended his contract to play for the Lions in the upcoming 2022 season.

“That’s so bad!” – Ammies fans react to Salford Monopoly’s Moor Lane square image mix-up
Disappointed Salford City fans have given their reactions after discovering that the Moor Lane square on the Salford Monopoly board actually uses an image from a different stadium.
Salford’s highly anticipated monopoly board was released in October and features some of the city’s most iconic spots such as Salford Lads’ Club, Media City, Peel Park and Salford City’s Moor Lane stadium.
Many Salford fans took to social media to complain about the image controversy with one Facebook User ‘Craig Haworth’ calling the mistake “embarrassing”

“I think they’re great, but not when they’re thrown all over the place”- Campaigners share their concerns about e-scooters
They were launched in a blaze of publicity last year and hailed as the eco-friendly alternative for Salford, but now Lime e-scooters are being blamed for causing a hazard on the pavement.
Campaigners claim the electric vehicles are often dumped on pavements, leaving pedestrians and wheelchair users at risk. They also said children are often spotted riding around on them illegally, as users have to be over 18.
The group, known as Walk Ride Salford Central, met with city councillors at a ‘Walk and Talk’ event to highlight areas of concern for pedestrians, such as Sat navigation systems, unlit streets, and increased levels of pollution too.
Event organiser Harry Gray said it was essential all pedestrians were able to use the pavements safely, and he said more guidance was needed to encourage the correct use of alternative forms of transport such as E-scooters.

“I always said after Jamie died, I would never shy away from how he died” – Why a Salford charity are helping people who lost loved ones to suicide
A charity in Salford run a ‘bereaved by suicide’ support group every month for people to talk about losing their loved ones to suicide.
Tammy Pike, 49, set up the support group years after her brother, Jamie Horrocks, committed suicide.
The support group is part of the Jamie Horrocks Trust. The trust was founded by Jamie’s family in 2013 after Jamie’s death. He was 37 years old.

“It’s come most strongly and loudly from young people who feel a real urgency” – Bishop of Salford celebrates younger generation’s efforts to fight climate change
Attending the Glasgow-based conference as the spokesperson on the environment for the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, Bishop John Arnold of the Diocese of Salford is also hoping that government powers will action the core aims of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
He said: “200 leaders are meeting together to make important decisions, but never before in history has there been such an upsurge of interest and concern about what they’re going to discuss and the decisions that they need to make.
“And that concern has come from political leaders and faith leaders round the world, it’s come from organisations and associations, but it’s come most strongly and loudly from young people who feel a real urgency, because we’re not looking after our common home, we’re not caring for it, we’re not caring for our brothers and sisters.”
Bishop John is inviting people across the diocese to dedicate this Sunday as a special day of prayer to mark the opening of the COP26 climate change conference.

Salford residents voice fury over cancellation of firework displays
Salfordians have reacted with anger and disappointment at the announcement that fireworks displays at Buile Hill and Prince’s Park have been cancelled.
Salford City Council and Greater Manchester Police says the probability of ‘unprecedented levels’ of attendance, the capacity of already highly pressured emergency services as well as high COVID rates across the city made the cancellation the right choice.
Demi Ashton continued: “Surely this is safer than everyone doing it at home in their gardens???”
Danielle Dee Carter agreed: “This actually sucks cause just means more ppl in their gardens setting them off, at least when it’s done in the park you know for that hour the dogs are guna go nuts. 3am they were being set off the other night! Dog gave me a heart attack barking n waking me up.”

Voters in Blackfriars and Trinity are gearing up to head to their local polling station for a council by-election on Thursday.
The by-election was called following the death of Labour councillor Ray Walker in August 2021.
There are four candidates standing in the by-election on Thursday:
• Roseanna Wain – Labour Party
• Christopher Bates – The Conservative Party candidate
• Joseph Ross Allen – Liberal Democrats
• David Jones – Green Party

Dock10 plants 2,500 trees to celebrate 10-year anniversary
The TV facility have planted an area of rainforest that is the same size as the physical footprint of its building – an enormous 12,500 square metre.
The initiative comes as part of the IPE project in the Atlantic Rainforest, a plan to help build up isolated areas of the forest floor.

Filling up these empty areas (or creating ‘tree corridors’) facilitates the dispersal of animals between isolated areas, expanding the places where they can find food and breed. This significantly increases their chances of survival both individually and as a species.

Will this be the year? A look at the last decade of Salford City in the FA Cup ahead of their next campaign
Salford City will be starting their 2021/22 FA Cup campaign on Monday as they travel to Dagenham & Redbridge live on ITV4.
A victory would see the Ammies into the second round of the FA Cup for only the third time in the clubs history, and only a win away from potentially facing Manchester United or Liverpool.
This is a far cry to where the club was before the investment from the class of ’92 when they were facing the likes of Warrington Town and Hemsworth Miners Welfare, and having to start their FA Cup campaign in August.

Salford Residents anger over the cancellation of the firework display
Facebook users shared and commented on the Firework Display cancellation article expressing their disappointment.
Tanya Swindon said on Facebook “Bloody ridiculous! Yet footy matches festivals etc anything that makes money are absolutely fine! Kids have lost out on so much already! Really bad decision.”
Ainsleigh Oakley commented on the post “What an absolute joke. Ruining everything for the Kids. Can go get messy on Heaton Park but can’t watch firework displays? Stupid cos watch A&E numbers go up now with burns as people attempt at doing them themselves!”

Salford City Council and Greater Manchester Police have announced the cancellation of this weekend’s Bonfire Night celebrations.

“It’s so important people don’t feel alone or isolated” – A community hub starts trauma support courses for people in Salford
A community hub in Salford is preparing courses for PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) and trauma sufferers in Victoria Park.
Starting on Wednesday the 3rd of November, the Salford Hive Community Hub will be hosting the courses from 10:00am to 12:00 pm.
The Hive was originally open to veterans and ex-armed forces personnel as their focus as a veteran’s café, but they eventually broadened their approach to helping the community.

Pendlebury Social Club is welcoming back its ‘Bop at the Bingo’ event this Saturday evening.
Drag Queen, ‘Angela Bra’ is set to host the ‘Bingo at the Disco’ that promises to be a mad, fun-filled spontaneous party experience like guests have never had before.
Featuring dancing, balloons, glow sticks and fancy dress, the tour team are excited to re-visit the social club for the first-time post-lockdown.

Where to get your Covid booster jab in Salford
With some evidence suggesting that the second dose of COVID-19 vaccinations can reduce in efficacy in just over six months, healthcare professionals are recommending receiving a third ‘booster’ dosage.
The booster can be offered to vulnerable people to help strengthen immune systems throughout the winter period.
As well as helping curb winter illnesses, the booster is expected to help prevent hospitalisations due to COVID.

Bishop John praises young people in battle against climate change
This week, world leaders, campaigners, and climate activists are gathering in Glasgow for the largest summit ever to take place on UK soil: the UN’s Climate Change Conference (COP26).
Among those in attendance is Bishop John Arnold of the Diocese of Salford, the spokesperson on the environment for the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.
A true leader for climate justice and environmental action, Bishop John is keen to remind us all of the importance of the COP26 summit, the opportunities it presents, and the critical crossroads it represents on our journey to ecological conversion.

“It’s a series of picture books to help children think about how places can be made better for disabled people”- Salford Disability Activist writes Better Places children’s books
Ben Andrews has campaigned for disabled people’s rights since he was 17 years old, having started his business Beyond Empower which helps to make places accessible to enable disabled people to be active.
Aged 29, and from Salford, Ben has written a series of children books called Better Places to teach kids how places can be made better for disabled people, exploring a variety of different environments and settings including streets, as touched on in his recent YouTube video.
His goal is for more awareness around how relatively small things like contrasting colours or audio signalling can have such a big impact on disabled people lives.
