Eccles Rugby Club announced today that eight members of their U16s team have been selected to play for the Lancashire U16 squad on Sunday in a match against Cheshire at Liverpool St Helens RFC.

The carefully selected bunch, who have been branded on Instagram by the club as the ‘Eccles Eight’ consist of local lads; Mathew Houghton, Matthew Gardiner, Leighton Strand, Jack Costello, Harry Peacock, Sam Dixon and Chayse Quigley.

The boy’s teammate, James Edwards was also selected to compete in Sunday’s game, however he is unable to participate in the match due to a broken hand. All eight players were handpicked after participating in assessed trials during the Sale Sharks Northwest DPP programme.

In a post on Instagram, Eccles Rugby Club told followers that their U16 squad are developing into a capable team with 12 wins from 16 competitive fixtures so far this season and that everyone at the club is looking forward to watching their progress as Colts next season and hopefully, increasing the Lancashire caps within the squad.
