Worsley Cricket Club

Worsley Cricket Club are looking forward to what they hope will be a first Covid free season for 2 years.

After heavily disrupted 2020 and 2021 campaigns the club are set to have their first full uninterrupted season since 2019.

Chris Hall is the club treasurer and spoke of how important the return of social events at the club this season will be.

He said: “We still think the social side is very important, we’d play cricket for five hours and then go in the bar for 10.

“It’s not just the first team though, the social side is also important for kids and to get the parents involved.”

Worsley Cricket Club have three senior teams as well as several junior teams ranging from under 9’s to under 15’s.

Mr Hall explained how the club can also create a greater sense of community.

He said: “We ask parents and families to come down to the club and enjoy themselves because it’s a community as far as we’re concerned.”

The senior teams compete in the Greater Manchester Cricket League, with the 1st XI starting their 2022 campaign against United Stars Cricket Club on Saturday 23rd April.

Mr Hall said: “We’re trying to make a big push on juniors this year and really want the club to be utilised by the community.

“It’s somewhere for kids to play. If they take the game up, then that is all well and good but if they are enjoying the facilities that is great for us as well.”

Beginning on May 6th the club will also run All Stars Camps, providing training sessions for five- to eight-year-olds.

Mr Hall said: “We’re really looking forward to a season when we’re unburdened with Covid and can have these social situations again.”

“We had to dance round it a lot the last two years. We managed to play cricket alright, but the social side wasn’t as good.”

He added: “In the last couple of months, we’ve seen people coming into the club more because they feel more comfortable. And hopefully with the summer that will only increase.”
