Salford City Council has proposed the £40 million 100 Embankment building for the Great British railway headquarters, which is set to be announced in summer.

The site situated on Cathedral Street, is located on the site of the former Manchester exchange station.

Salford Mayor Paul Dennet said:” “It would be the perfect example of the levelling up that this government is aiming to deliver for communities in the Northwest.”

It is only a 10-minute walk from Manchester’s Victoria railway station.

The Council say that Salford fits the criteria due to its railway history:” Our main city centre station, Salford Central, has been in use since 1838 as the main terminus for the historic Manchester and Bolton Railway line which is now part of the Manchester to Preston line – one of the busiest in the Northwest.”

The bid comes after the government propose for the new building to be hosted by a city situated outside of the capital.

Bolton and Rochdale council have also submitted separate bids bring the HQ to Greater Manchester, along with 42 other councils around the country.

The mayor also said:”Greater Manchester has also become one of Whitehall’s key outposts outside of London and is home to several key government departments who have brought decision-making to our doorstep.”

The government will mark each bid against their criteria which includes, the area has goof transport connections, the area has railway heritage, and the area has already got public support for the plans.

The council also add that Salford is in desperate need of investment due to being one of the most deprived areas in the country, with 9% of residents having no formal qualifications, and is the 18th most deprived area in the country.

Great British Railways was announced to be the predecessor of Network rail.
