The Pink Picnic event in Salford is set to make a fabulous ‘full fledged’ return after Covid with celebrities such as the Cheeky Girls and Drag Queen Kitty Scott-Claus taking the stage.
The Pink Picnic celebration is a free event in honour of the LGBTQ+ community in Salford, and will be organised and delivered by Salford Pride.
The event is set to kick off on the 25th of June in Peel Park. Event organisers for the Pink Picnic are expecting numbers of around ‘ten thousand’ based on the amount of available tickets.
Content Media Officer, Ben Allen said: “It’s a place for everyone, the LGBTQ+ community love it and I’d say it’s one of the biggest events in Salford.”
This years Pink Picnic has big shoes to fill following on from last years Salford Pride, the likes of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ semi-finalist, Cheryl Hole and one of CBBC’s canine favorite’s, Hacker wowed Salford in June 2021.
Ben continued: “We managed to keep it free for people because not everybody has the money to pay for a ticket to Manchester pride.
“For people to be able to go to the park for free and know they have a safe space where they can be happy was important to us.”
“I’d say to celebrate Salford as a city is also quite important. This is a family event for everyone.”
“I think it is important to celebrate the community because we’re not always celebrated and there’s much more marginalized members of our community that especially need to be celebrated like non binary people, trans people who experience a lot of adversity in their everyday lives.
“I think for them, to go to a celebration where they can feel like they’re being celebrated for who they are is quiet moving for them and that’s the importance of it.”
Salford Pride organised the original Pink Picnic in Peel Park in 2011 and since then the educational project has grown into what it is today.
Salford Pride said: “Salford Pride delivers Salford’s annual pride event, The Pink Picnic, and other fundraising, awareness and educational projects for the LGBT+ community that are open to all to attend and enjoy – no matter how they identify; promoting equality, inclusion and community cohesion.”
In terms to the scale of the event compared to previous years before Covid, Ben said: “The event could be slightly smaller, because Covid has really stunted it slightly so we are experiencing a bit of financial difficulty which is why you should donate to the fundraiser.”
