Campaigners at the University of Salford have created the Proud to Believe in Life Beyond Dementia project to raise funds for resources at the Dementia Hub.

A FundUS page has been created for the public to sponsor and donate to the Dementia Hub, which is situated near the Allerton Building at the University of Salford.

The Proud to Believe in Life Beyond Dementia project hopes that the donations can provide resources such as arts and crafts supplies, a camera to use in a photography group and a specialist instructor for one session.

The crowdfunding project has currently raised £155 through 9 sponsors, however the goal is to reach £550 so that the Dementia Hub can successfully receive the brand new, planned resources.

Laura Sears, organiser of the Proud to Believe in Life Beyond Dementia crowdfunding campaign, said: “We’re wanting to get to £550, so we’re just under half way through the campaign.”

The project has also stated that any extra donations would be used to expand on the resources available for the Dementia Hub. This includes equipment such as an iPad, worth £500, that would be used for technology lessons.

The Dementia Hub first opened in 2017 by Salford University Alumni, Christopher Eccleston. The opening of the Hub was one of many events that took place from 15th May 2017 to mark Dementia Awareness Week.

The original idea of the Dementia Hub was to “make sure that there was a place inside the community in Salford that people could go to and it could really treat them as a person, so it’s looking at the character of a person rather than the condition.”

The Salford Institute for Dementia works closely with people affected by Dementia, creating the Dementia Hub has opened up a space within Salford for those with Dementia to enjoy a range of activities and to encourage socialising.

Dementia Awareness Week 2018 takes place on May 21-27, events will take place across the UK to raise awareness and offer support for those affected by the disease.
