A PUB that will host a St George’s Day street party hopes the wider community will come together to celebrate all things English.
The Brindley Arms, on Whittle Street in Walkden, holds a street party in honour of England’s patron saint each year.
Staff and pub regulars are looking forward to welcoming the wider community, bringing everyone together to celebrate being English.
Pub owner, Anne Hamblett, has been in charge of The Brindley since 2008. She hopes that the day will be a time for people to be proud of being English.
She said: “The great thing about this year’s event is that it is the first time it has fallen on a Saturday in years.
“We’re going to celebrate with cake stalls, a hog roast and entertainment for the children. From 7.30pm we’ll be having a disco for the adults.
“People come from everywhere; Walkden, Salford, Bolton, Farnworth.”
According to legend, St George was a Christian martyr born in what is now modern-day Turkey. He is thought to have been a Roman soldier and is perhaps most famous as being attributed to slaying a dragon.
George is the patron saint of several countries including England, Romania and Georgia.
This year is perhaps even more poignant for English heritage as Saturday, April 23 also marks the 400th anniversary of the birth, and death, of William Shakespeare.
St George’s Day and symbols of St George have often been used by far-right groups such as the EDL and the BNP in recent years.
Anne hopes the celebration will show the community that the saint has nothing to do with the activities of extremist groups and that English culture should be celebrated.
She added: “For us, it’s about celebrating being English and British and the community coming together, it’s a family day.”
Four nearby houses will be adorned with St George flags in celebration of the day. With the permission of Salford Council, the street will be closed off to allow stalls and a bouncy castle to be erected.
