SAMMY Lee has left his post as post as England’s assistant manager.

The 57 year old was appointed assistant to Sam Allardyce during the summer and remained in the role after the managers sacking in September and Gareth Southgate’s during time as interim boss. However, Lee will not remain his role as Southgate has decided to alter his backroom staff.

Former Liverpool midfielder and coach Lee had a brief spell in the England set up under manager Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2005 before becoming Bolton Wanderers permanent manager. After leaving the trotters he joined up with his former club Liverpool in 2007 to become Rafael Benitez’s assistant.

Lee returned to Bolton in 2012 where he was appointed head of academy coaching and development, before joining the Southampton coaching staff in 2014.

Speaking to The Guardian Lee Said: “I should like to place on record my sincere thanks to the FA for the opportunity they gave me to work with the national team. It has been a great honour.

“I should also like to thank the players and staff for their support during this period of my career and wish them all the very best for the future. In particular I wish Gareth and his new coaching team every success in the future.”
