THE University of Chester Rowing Club claimed a 2-1 victory over Salford University Boat Club in the Varsity regatta.

Salford almost secured a result in their favour when the Women’s Coxed Four made a late surge in the second race, but their Chester counterparts were able to hold on.

The hosts took the lead through an impressive display from the Men’s Coxed Eight in the first race, but a blistering showing from the visiting rowers in the Men’s Coxed Four ensured Chester claimed the Varsity point.

Salford won the 2016 Varsity regatta 3-2 at Grosvenor Rowing Club and with a single race separating the teams once again, this remains one of the most competitive Varsity events.
