FOLLOWING the terror attack at Manchester Arena in May,  high-profile safety measures have been put in place at the city’s Christmas markets, but are they actually making citizens feel safer?

Armed police will be at the Christmas markets this year in an effort to combat terror threats due to the fact that the UK has recently gone into severe alert threat level in terms of risk of international terrorism.

Manchester has previously been attacked by ex-Salford University pupil Salman Abedi on  May 22 at an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena. Due to this, security in the city is being taken much more seriously this year than previously.

This type of precaution is not exclusive to Manchester,  as various cities throughout the UK are putting their staff through anti-terror training with police as part of Project Griffin.

Project Griffin is an initiative set up following the 9/11 attacks in New York and brought to the UK due to the 7/7 attacks in London. These have been focused upon heavily in 2017 due to the UK recently going onto critical alert following not only the Manchester Arena attacks but also the Westminster attack on 22nd March and the London attack on 3rd June 2017.

Manchester’s Christmas markets officially opened this past Saturday and so far the sight of armed police has not been noticed by the vast majority of people interviewed in the above video.

What has been noted however is the knowledge of them being there makes the atmosphere of the market feel safer.

Manchester Christmas market is set to be open until December 21st, be sure to go down now to avoid missing out.
