A SCHEME to prevent elderly people from feeling lonely and isolated is being backed by Stockport County Football Club.

The ‘Sport in Memories’ get-togethers, which are run with support from Stockport Homes and The Mental Health Carers Group, invites people to bring along their own sporting memorabilia and enjoy collections and stories from others.

A survey carried out earlier this year on behalf of the Jo Cox commission found that almost three-quarters of older people in the United Kingdom felt lonely.

Matthew Bailey, Assistant Community Foundation Manager said: “The scheme aims to make a real difference to people’s life’s in the community and provide support for those who are lonely and living in social isolation.

“The people who have turned up so far have had a fantastic time.

“We want to work with people in sheltered housing, get the residents down and make a real difference to the community.”

Although the scheme is hosted by Stockport County, supporters of all teams are welcome as are memories from all sports.

The meetings have been running over the past five weeks and numerous happy memories have been shared from sports such as gymnastics and speedway.

The sessions run weekly on Wednesdays between 10.00am – 12.00pm in the Help the Hatters Museum based at Edgeley Park.

Stockport County Foundation are a charity and for the event to carry on for the foreseeable future it requires extra funding.

Alongside other Non-profit groups they are vying for a share of the Stockport Council Community Investment Fund.
